About

I am a Japanese dye artist in Okinawa, specializing in hand-dyed traditional sarashi cloth for prenatal and postnatal use.
Birth-Work Philosophy
Sarashi is a traditional Japanese cotton cloth that has long been used as a maternity belly band during pregnancy. The act of wrapping the belly band is not only a prayer for safe childbirth, but also a meaningful ritual through which a woman turns her attention to her own body, senses the preciousness and sacredness of the life growing within her womb, and quietly awakens her awareness of becoming a mother.

The time spent carefully wrapping the belly band is a deeply important moment for an expectant mother to connect with herself and with the life she carries. This time, however, does not belong to the pregnant woman alone. Family members and those who support her can also take part by holding and wrapping the band, engaging with the mother through this shared act.

Through this involvement, bonds between people are formed. The role of those who support the mother naturally takes shape, affection for the unborn baby is shared, and a sense of unity grows among all who surround her. I believe the belly band is a precious presence that connects hearts and allows people to prepare together to welcome new life.

I wish to carry forward the culture of the sarashi belly band, a tradition that has been passed down in Japan for generations.

Sarashi is not used only during pregnancy. After childbirth, it transforms into a versatile cloth that can be used to hold a baby, to carry a child on the back, and to support everyday childcare. Its simplicity and adaptability also make it useful in daily life and in small emergencies. It is a cloth filled with the accumulated wisdom of those who came before us.

By carefully preserving this traditional textile, and by sharing it through modern life, my purpose is to nurture the bond between mothers and their babies through sarashi.
